In September 2011 MAMA organised talent talks, where six promising 2011 art graduates went about their work in conversation with a group of critics and curators. Following on from her talent talk, MAMA invited Lonneke van der Palen (1985) to make a presentation of her work. Entitled, Souvenir, the presentation coincides with Brad Troemel's (U.S., 1988) exhibition The Social Life of Things.
In Souvenir - French for memory - van der Palen uses the idea of photographic clich├ęs to create three distinctive series of pictures: Souvenir, Dinner and Fox, in which everyday items are assembled into iconic images. Van der Palen's still lifes and portraits are characterized by carefully stylized and colourful compositions, emphasizing a high degree of artificiality also characteristic of her fashion photographs for clients such as BLEND.

Lonneke van der Palen studied photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, during which time she interned at Blommers-Schumm, Amsterdam. Her work has been shown at FASHIONCLASH Maastricht, is currently to be seen at HOPE creative department store, and later this year in the State X festival - both in The Hague. The Souvenir series was Van der Palen's graduation work. The presentation at MAMA shall be the first time the three different series are exhibited together in a photographic display.

Talent Talk participants: Sandra W. Nanteza (Gerrit Rietveld Academie), Lonneke van der Palen (Royal Academy of Art, The Hague), Maarten Bel (Sint Joost), Lotte Reimann (Gerrit Rietveld Academie), Janine van Veen (Minerva), ABK collective, Maastricht, represented by Joep Vossebeld.

Curators and critics: Ruud Akse and Zwaan Ipema (NP3, Groningen), Lene ter Haar (Schunck*, Heerlen), Domeniek Ruyters (Metropolis M), Sandra Smets (NRC Handelsblad), Nathalie Hartjes (Kunstbeeld, De Appel, Amsterdam), Gerben Willers (MAMA, Rotterdam).

Souvenir is organised by Jesse van Oosten, a participant of Showroom MAMA's Rookies MA program.
