Kapsalon Art Platform and MAMA present the results of a master class: a series of posters and a documentary. Twelve artists, image makers and art critics worked intensively together with master Emory Douglas (USA, 1943), former graphic artist of the Black Panther Party.
Douglas supported the participants in this master class with the formulation of their concepts and the design of the posters. The posters were screen-printed in collaboration with Mesh Print Club. The posters will be shown in De Kapsalon together with film, audio and photo material about the Black Panther Party.

The central focus of the master class was to design an emancipatory message that communicates itself as clearly as possible. The participants each met this challenge with an individual contribution. The result is a broad series of posters that deal with a rich variety of themes: from fear to political activism.

The exhibition in De Kapsalon Art Platform is part of MAMA's project (I Can) Feel the Pulse (2010). This project focuses on the crossovers between hip hop and (visual) art. Besides the eponymous exhibition in Showroom MAMA, the (I Can) Feel the Pulse project comprised a lecture, a debate, the master class by Emory Douglas and a performance. The project will be accompanied by a publication developed in close collaboration with Mesh Print Club.

MAMA and De Kapsalon would like to thank Emory Douglas, Mesh Print Club, YourSpace, Niki van Strien, Sandim Mendes and all participants in the master class for their wonderful dedication.
