REPORT OPENING POSITIONING SYSTEM

Vrijdag 1 december was het dan eindelijk zover, de expositie Positioning System werd geopend. Voor de zes jonge academici die MAMA’s Mr. Miyagi Curating Tommorow, een fast-course curating, gevolgd hadden was het een spannend moment.
De Miyagi’s waren in Nederland en België rond gaan shoppen op de eindexamenpresentaties van afstuderende kunstenaars. En zoals in Positioning System te zien is; daar zit een hoop fris talent tussen.

Natuurlijk hadden onze trotse curatoren hun ouders, kennissen en vrienden meegenomen en dit gold ook voor de startende kunstenaars. Het was dus super-crowded deze vrijdagavond in de Showroom en er werd druk heen-en-weer gelopen tussen onze opening en die van de overburen in Witte de With.

MAMA’s privé-keukentje werd door kunstenaar Philippe van Wolputte geclaimd en is nu getransformeerd – of geïntervenieerd, zoals hij het zelf noemt- tot het site-specific werk Stockage / Transmitter. Heidi Linck is dagen ter plekke bezig geweest met inkt en op een van de wanden verscheen langzaam vanuit een bizar proces met spiegels, licht en schaduwen het werk Dawn. Zeer indrukwekkend!
De routes die de Miyagi’s, kunstenaars en MAMA-crew hebben afgelegd tijdens de opbouwperiode zijn gemarkeerd op de vloer in het werk Positioneringssysteem van Willem Besselink. Verder nog te bewonderen; dvd’s van Mounira Al Solh, sculpturen van Chris Mudde en werk van Pierre Derks. De HideAways van Rosalie Monod de Froidville zijn niet te missen; ze staan namelijk kriskras door de Showroom opgesteld. Blijf zeker staan bij de prachtige dvd Asche van Katharina D. Martin, die ook een gedenkwaardige performance tijdens de opening gaf. De intense geur van ruig, rondtollend metaal op verpulverend bot; onbeschrijflijk!

Er viel naast al dit werk van nieuwkomers nog meer te genieten want dankzij onze vrienden van Vice hadden we deze opening gratis bier. Waarvoor hulde! Mocht je de opening van Positioning System gemist hebben, de show is nog te zien t/m 14 januari 2007.

REPORT OPENING POSITIONING SYSTEM

Friday the first of December was the finest hour for the six young academics who did MAMA’s Mr. Miyagi Curating Tomorrow Programme, a fast-course curating. Positioning System, their exhibition from selected work by young graduating art-students, was opened.
The Miyagi’s went shopping at academies throughout Belgium and The Netherlands and, as Positioning System shows, there’s a lot fresh talent out there.

Of-course our proud curators and new-coming artists brought their parents and a lot of family and friends, which resulted in a fully crowded Showroom. A new show also opened at our opposite neighbours from Witte de With and there was busy traffic between the two.

MAMA’s private kitchen was completely refurbished by artist Philippe van Wolputte
and is know transformed – or intervened, as he calls it himself – into the site-specific artwork Stockage / Transmitter. Heidi Linck was working at the Showroom for days and from a bizarre proces with light, shadow and mirrors the work Dawn arose. Dark, but very impressive!
You can track the routes that the Miyagi’s, artists and MAMA-crew took whilst building Positioning System. They’re marked on the floor in the work Positioneringssysteem by Willem Besselink. And there’s more to enjoy; dvd’s by Mounira Al Solh, sculptures by Chris Mudde and work by Pierre Derks. You can’t miss the cozy HideAways by Rosalie Monod de Froidville; they’re placed crisscross through the Showroom. Also take your time for the amazing dvd Asche by Katharina D. Martin, who gave a memorable performance at the opening. The intense scent of blunt metal crushing bone; indiscribable!

Besides all the works by upcoming artists there was more to enjoy, for instance the free beer by our friends from Vice; thanx guys! If you, by any chance, have missed the opening of Positioning System, it can still be visited until the fourteenth of January 2007.
