Mr. Miyagi Curators Programme (Pilot)" is the experimental, first year trial of one of MAMA's Mr. Miyagi programme activities. The Mr. Miyagi programme is the strand of educational and development activities delivered by MAMA aimed at building capacity and providing learning opportunities for tomorrow's workers in the visual culture industries. The Mr. Miyagi Curators Programme The Aim of the Mr. Miyagi Curators Programme -To provide learning and development opportunities in contemporary curatorial practice as an alternative or complement to the limited existing academic routes. -To build capacity amongst local practitioners for the changing curatorial practices in the visual arts and culture field -To provide a career-development opportunity for young artists and curators involved in the programme -To provide a credible platform for young artists to introduce their work to broader publics. It will do this by providing successful eligible applicants with vocational skills and curatorial practice development through: -Participation in a number of intensive workshops delivered by an international mentor panel -Access to support, advice and guidance form an international panel of curators -Access to support, advice, guidance and practical support from specific staff within MAMA -Access to peer support including use of e-learning tools to communicate and learn from each other -The opportunity to practice as a curator on a visual arts project that will be shown in a publicly funded visual arts space in Rotterdam in October 2005 Full details of how these are delivered in a number of stages are given below. There is no charge to successful applicants participating in the programme. The programme will be conducted in Dutch and English and participants need to indicate a reasonable level of proficiency in both languages. Who Can Take Part? To participate in the programme in its pilot first year, applicants need to be . -Resident in Benelux -Indicate that they are available to attend all workshops if selected. -Show that they are committed to the additional work that they will have to undertake individually and as a group to complete the project -Show that they understand that they will need to be active as curators not merely make a selection and expect the show to be produced without their active input and involvement -Demonstrate a reasonable level of Dutch and English as a means of spoken and written communication. Although there is currently no formal "rule" limiting it to young people or students, art students, students in other cultural subjects or recent graduates are seen as one of the key audiences for this programme. The 2005 Programme is NOT open to: -Those employed as professional curators -Those who are not resident in Belgium, Luxemburg or The Netherlands for the duration of 2005. How Do I Apply? Stages of the Mr. Miyagi 2005 Pilot Programme The Programme consists of a number of specific stages Stage One April/May 2005 1. MAMA invites applications from eligible applicants. The deadline for these is 22 May 2005 2. The initial application is made using the downloadable form that needs to be returned to MAMA via e-mail. This will involve answering a few broad questions that give insight into the applicant's skills, motivations and views. 3. MAMA will select 12 applicants who will be invited to the initial 2-day workshop event taking place in Rotterdam. Stage Two - May 2005 1. Workshop Event One: Sat 4 & Sun 5 June 2005. This will act as both a learning and selection event. Details and information on this are will be sent to those successful applicants invited to take part in this stage. Applicants will meet the mentor panel of curators at this stage. 2. After the two days, together with MAMA, the mentor panel will select 6 participants to progress to the next stages of the programme. They will immediately be notified by email and in writing. Stage Three - June/July 2005 1. The 6 applicants will attend a meeting with MAMA Sun 12 Jun 2005 where the broad briefing of the project - the task to build a project from the talent of the Benelux 2005 graduating year - will be outlined. During the course of June/July 2005 they will be expected to attend student shows at the academies in Benelux, speak with each other and speak with young artists. 2. Each participant will be expected to prepare a portfolio of ideas and images of work that they feel is strong to bring with them to the next workshop with the mentor panel. 3. A second two-day workshop will take place in July with the mentor panel on Fri 15 and Sat 16 July 2005. During this workshop, the mentor panel will work with the participants to decide how the project will take shape and to identify the responsibility for practical tasks. Stage Four -September 2005 1. The third two-day workshop Fri 2 & Sat 3 September 2005 will focus on using the professional mentor panel to comment on the prepared project and to make final alterations, respond to any problems with participating artists etc. 2. The second key aspect of this, the final workshop, will be the transition into production. The participants will have to establish working relationships and plans with those involved in the production of the project in October 2005. Stage Five - September to October 2005 1. Managing their individual roles within the group, the participant group will have to work with the support made available by MAMA to bring the project/exhibition to realisation. Stage Six Oct/October 2005 1. Participants will involved with the practical sides of the production, hanging/installing the works, working with the selected artists. Working with volunteers and the floor manager of MAMA; being active in the press and promotion for the exhibition. 2. Preparing for the opening and attending the opening. 3.
