Een last minute stormloop van aanvragen voor
het Mr Miyagi Curators Programme kwam binnen net voor sluitingstijd op 22 mei 2005.
Na zorgvuldige analyse en veel discussie, zijn de eerste participanten geselecteerd.
Omdat
over het algemeen de aanvragen zeer sterk waren, werd er besloten om 14
deelnemers uit te nodigen voor de eerste workshops en een tweede selectieproces
op zaterdag 4 juni en zondag 5 juni.
 Uit de aanvragen van deze eerste ploeg deelnemers komt een brede scoop
aan ideeën en benaderingen naar voren. De deelnemers komen uit Gent,
Groningen, Utrecht, Hilversum Amsterdam en Rotterdam.
De curatoren die de eerste workshop weekend leiden hebben de moeilijke
taak om 6 deelnemers te selecteren om het tweede deel van het traject
in te gaan met als uiteindelijk resultaat een project in Showroom MAMA
in oktober 2005. Iedere deelnemer zal naast de nodige theorie, ook in
de praktijk alle aspecten van het tentoonstelling maken leren.
De curatoren die de deelnemers als mentoren gaan begeleiden zijn:
Bettina Carl (Berlijn), Jeanne van Heeswijk (Rotterdam),
Ann de Meester (Amsterdam)
Over het programma
Het Mr. Miyagi curators programme biedt een selecte groep van jonge curatoren
de mogelijkheid om mee te doen aan een programma waar ze worden bijgestaan
door een internationale groep van mentoren op het gebied van curation.
Het programma is een van MAMA's onderwijsinitiatieven, de Mr. Miyagi
projecten. Het doel daarvan is het opbouwen van capaciteit en vakkundigheid
voor de volgende generatie die zich gaat bezighouden met kunst & cultuur
door middel van gerichte beroepservaring en leren.
Bovendien gaan zij in overeenstemming met het algemene karakter van het
programma een project ontwikkelen dat de talenten van jonge kunstenaars
laat zien. Jonge kunstenaars profiteren hier dus ook van en het blijft
een jonger publiek voor beeldende kunsten aantrekken.

A rush of last-minute applications arrived
just before the closing date of the Mister Miyagi Curators Programme on
22 May 2005.
 After
careful attention and much debate, the first participants for the first
ever run of the programme were selected. Based on the overall strength
of the applications, it was decided to invite 14 initial participants
to attend the initial workshops and selection process on Saturday and
Sunday, 4 and 5 June.
Coming from Rotterdam, Groningen, Hilversum, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Ghent,
the initial participants represent a broad range of ideas and approaches.
MAMA also wishes to thank all those who made the effort to apply. Frankly,
the overall high standard of applications made the task of selection very
difficult, but it is also reassuring to see so many people interested
in taking curation seriously as a practice.
The curators leading the initial workshops on that weekend will have
the difficult task of inviting 6 participants to progress through the
remainder of the programme, culminating in the making of a project for
MAMA in October 2005. But of course, all attending should learn a lot
more about the realities of curation by attending the first workshop weekend.
MAMA is also pleased to be able to announce the curator mentors who will
lead the participants through the programme this year.
They are Jeanne van Heeswijk (Rotterdam), Bettina Carl
(Berlin) and Ann de Meester (Amsterdam).
About the Programme
The Mr. Miyagi Curators Programme will offer an opportunity for a select
group of young curators to take part in a programme that will involve
them being supported by an international group of mentor curators.
The programme is one of MAMA's education initiatives, the Mr. Miyagi
projects. It aims to build capacity and skill for the next generation
of cultural practitioners through relevant vocational experience and learning.
And, in keeping with the overall ethos of the programme, they will develop
a project that will showcase talented young artists. So, it will also
benefit young artists and continue to address a younger visual arts audience.
