Na de funky show Lamball Bakra – Baschz en Friends zocht MAMA het weer in een geheel andere hoek; die van de grote verstilling. De expo Mise en Scène van curator Ken Pratt ademde rust en kalmte. Ruisende vitrage in een geheel witte ruimte, een setting die perfect matcht met het gevoel van de kunstwerken. Door sommigen zal deze show als White Cube betiteld worden, maar who cares; het MAMA publiek heeft ervan gesmuld en de bezoekersaantallen waren ernaar.

En heeee: voor wie het nog niet wist: Anneke Wilbrink mocht die avond de Koninklijke Subs in ontvangst nemen en dat kan niemand die haar werk ziet verbazen.
Wel een beetje bad planning want hierdoor kon zij niet op de opening aanwezig zijn om hierop met ons te proosten. Anneke alsnog; Van Harte!

Vol lof werd er gesproken over het werk van Plinio Avila en Janice McNab. Hans Op de Beeck’s foto van een speeltuin à la Tim Burton hadden wij MAMA's allemaal wel in huis opgehangen en Anna Baumgarts dvd True? bleek ontstellend mooi en verontrustend tegelijk.

De digitale-print installatie van Mona Casey gaf het beste weer wat Mise en Scène nou eigenlijk is. Casey neemt beroemde meesterwerken, haalt daar hun hoofdpersonen uit en schildert de leegte in zoals de schilder dat zelf gedaan zou hebben. MAMA’s Rookie Riske is er zo verliefd op dat ze twee prints uit de installatie aan heeft geschaft.

Bij met name één werk waren constant mensen te vinden; namelijk rond de dvd 1Story van Wannes Goetschalckx. Deze one-man-action-movie is hilarisch en herinnert ons aan het ouderwetse apekooi. En ja, het was de echte box uit de film die in de Showroom stond.

Tenslotte waren de prachtige dvd’s van Ursula Mayer voor het eerst in Nederland te zien. Eén viel te bekijken in MAMA’s donkere filmzaaltje, alwaar Petra bij sluiting ontdekte dat sommigen de term ‘darkroom’ wel héél erg letterlijk namen. Rode oortjes kreeg men van Ursula’s wonder-schunnige boekwerk......zeker niet voor onder de 12!

Buiten vond er nog een geheel onverwachte live-action-performance plakactie door Silvia B. en Martin C. de Waal plaats, waarmee de laatste expo in het Museum van Nagsael werd aangekondigd. Dit kleinste museum van Nederland aan de Botersloot 40 in Rotterdam, is een initiatief van Silvia B. en Rolf Engelen dat maar liefst 11 jaar heeft bestaan!

Al met al was het ondanks het druilerige en gure weer een gedenkwaardige avond. Voor de mensen die ‘m gemist hebben; shame on you!

After our blasting show Lamball Bakra – Baschz en Friends MAMA turned a new corner. Our exhibition Mise en Scène by curator Ken Pratt oozed tranquility, with rustling curtains in a completely white space. This setting perfectly matched the feel of the exposed works.
Some will call this show ‘White Cube’, but who cares; Mise en Scène has drawn plenty of visitors and our audience loved it!

Ofcourse MAMA was very proud that Anneke Wilbrink was handed the ‘Royal price for free painting’ for her giga-paintings by Bea herself. It was a little bit bad planning, because therefore she had to miss out on the opening and we would have loved to drink a prosecco with Anneke.

The works by Plinio Avila and Janice McNab were much to the liking of the visitors. The complete MAMA-crew wanted to purchase Hans Op de Beeck’s image of a playground à la Tim Burton for their own living-room and Anna Baumgart’s dvd True? was of a startling beauty.

The digital print installation by Mona Casey perfectly reflected what Mise en Scène exactly is. Casey takes a famous masterpiece, removes the individuals and fills in the blanks meticulously in the style of the painter. MAMA’s Rookie Riske fell in love with this installation instantly purchased two prints out of it.

One work in particular was drawing lots of attention; 1Story by Wannes Goetschalckx. This one-man-action-movie is hilarious and reminds everyone of the games we played when we were kids. And yes, the box which the television was displayed on was the actual box from the movie.

The stunning dvd’s by Ursula Mayer were shown for the first time in the Netherlands. One of them was to be seen in MAMA’s dark little movie-space, where Petra at closing-time discovered that some of us took the term ‘dark-room’ very literally.
Mayer’s deep ‘n dirty book was also amazing but not the kind of literature ment for under age 12!

Outside awaited a surprise live-action-performance by Silvia B. and Martin C. de Waal, which announced the last exhibition in the Museum of Nagsael. This smallest museum of the Netherlands (Botersloot 40, Rotterdam), is an initiative of Silvia B. and Rolf Engelen that lasted for 11 years and had many memorable artists and shows on display.

All together it was an amazing evening. For all the people who’ve missed out; shame on you!
