Ladyshave in Londen
Op vrijdag 6 mei opende Ladyshave in Cell Project Space te London.
Deze opening trok een voor Londonse begrippen ongebruikelijke mix van London
East End kunstenaars, kunstliefhebbers maar ook underground diva’s
en club-celebrities: onder de gasten waren Princess Julia en Jim Stanton,
clubpromotor van ‘The Cock’ (een van London’s experimentele
clubs). Martin C. de Waal wiens werk in Ladyshave hangt voerde een ‘low
key’ performance uit. Een live photo-shoot in Cell met Princess Julia
en twee modellen geïmporteerd uit Amsterdam.
 Het
harde werk van Cell en MAMA (co-producer van Ladyshave) werd zeker beloond
met een afterparty in de nabijgelegen cabaret-chique nachtclub ‘Bistroteque’,
waar fashion MC uit Amsterdam, Martin Duval een sneak-preview performance
gaf.
Ondanks de reputatie van London als een ‘tough city’ liepen
alle aan Ladyshave gerelateerde projecten gesmeerd. Er werd veel Nederlands
te horen in “The Cock Live” op de zaterdagnacht van 7 mei.
Het podium werd gedeeld door Viktor en Martin Duval, waar zij het publiek
waaronder bezoekers van de expositie amuseerden. Volgens de geruchten
was Marc Almond zeer onder de indruk van "the phenomenon from Amsterdam".
Serieuzer was de paneldiscussie over de expositie in Cell op zondagmiddag
8 mei. Deze discussie werd voorgezeten door Edgar Schmitz en Lisa
La Feurve, een duo bekend van hun ‘sweatshop’ Serpetine
Gallery discussie programma. Het panel bestond naast sommige van de deelnemende
kunstenaars uit Sue-an van der Zijp (senior curator Groninger Museum)
Finse curator Tura Elfving en Maaike Schoorel, een Nederlandse
kunstenaar die woont en werkt in London. Het was niet verbazingwekkend
gezien de samenstelling van dit panel zeer interessante discussies opleverden.
 Tot
slot bedankt MAMA Cell Project Space voor de mogelijkheid om Nederlandse
kunst onder de aandacht te brengen in het hart van het kunstdistrict van
London en het werk wat zij hebben verzet om dit mogelijk te maken.
Ook bedankt MAMA uiteraard ook de kunstenaars, medewerkers en vrienden
die alles op alles hebben gezet om de eerste MAMA expositie in London
voor elkaar te krijgen.
Ladyshave loopt tot 5 juni 2005 in Cell Project Space.

Ladyshave in London
Friday 6th May saw the opening of "Ladyshave" at CellProject
Space with an unusual mixture of London East End artists and art supporters
rubbing shoulders with underground style divas. A bemused crowd that included
the likes of Princess Julia and Jim Stanton of "The Cock" fame
took in the low-key performance of Martin C. de Waal in the gallery as eager
visitors came to form an opinion on the works by Dutch artists on show.
Much hard work and organisation on the part off Cell Project Space and
MAMA (co-producer) paid off as people retired to the after party in nearby
cabaret-chic surroundings of "Bistroteque". The conversation
and enjoyment was only interrupted by the sneak preview performance of
a song by the fashion MC from Amsterdam, Martin Duvall.
The busy weekend of programmed events related to the opening of the exhibition
went unusually smoothly for a city with a tough reputation. More Dutch
than usual was heard at "The Cock Live" on the night of Saturday
7th where Martin Duvall shared the stage with the likes of Viktor to entertain
an audience that included some who had already visited the exhibition
and the occasional celebrity. Apparently Marc Almond found the performance
of "the phenomenon from Amsterdam" to his liking.
On a more serious note, a panel discussion related to the project took
place at Cell on the afternoon of Sunday 8th May. The project was fortunate
enough to have the event chaired by the duo of Edgar Schmitz and
Lisa La Feurve, perhaps best known for the "Sweatshop"
programme they run at The Serpentine Gallery in London.
 The
panel included artists showing in "Ladyshave", Sue-An van
der Zijp (Senior Curator Groninger Museum), Finnish curator, Tura
Elfving, and Maaike Schoorel, the Dutch artist living and working
in London. With such an impressive line-up, no wonder that the thought
and attention given to considering the show raised some very interesting
points for discussion. MAMA extends its thanks and congratulations to
Cell Project Space for undertaking so much work to create the opportunity
for Dutch artists to show in the heart of London's art district. And thanks
and congratulations should definitely extended to all the artists and
other people who have worked so hard to produce this show.
"Ladyshave" continues at Cell Project Space until 5th
June 2005.
