Gyz, wat ga je precies doen met Fret Click bij showroom MAMA?
Bij showroom MAMA maak ik de tentoonstelling 720°, oftewel 720 graden. Dat zijn twee rondjes, twee rondjes draaien op je skateboard. 720° gaat over balans, controle houden en gelijktijdige duizeligheid.
In 720° wordt een documentaire gepresenteerd die bij MAMA in première gaat. In de laatste maanden voor de tentoonstelling ben ik hard aan het werk om deze documentaire te maken. Deze wordt speciaal voor de tentoonstelling gemaakt, maar tegelijkertijd moet ‘ie ook op zichzelf staan, goed zijn.

Die documentaire gaat over Fret Click en Fret Click is een groep van12 gasten die rond hun twaalfde begonnen met skateboarden. Ikzelf hoorde daar ook bij. Deze grote groep jongens kwam uit Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Brabant en nog een paar uit de Randstad. Gezamenlijk hebben we de grootste en gekste avonturen beleefd en we waren heel erg goed in skateboarden.
Wat is Fret Click precies?
Fret Click is dus een groep lui.
En…?
Fret staat voor vriend, friend. Het is een soort Brabants-Engels. Friend verkeerd spellen is wel tof. De Click staat voor de klik tussen een paar mensen. Fret Click is daar dus een combinatie van.
Waren de Fret Clickers de beste skateboarders van Nederland?
De beste….. Tsja, een paar waren wel de beste. Skateboarden duurt een tijdje voor je het onder de knie hebt. De gemiddelde Fret Clicker begon eind jaren tachtig met skateboarden en begin jaren negentig werden we echt heel goed. Mike de Geus (r.i.p.) was de beste van heel Europa.
Was skateboarden al ingeburgerd in NL?
Nee, als je iemand in een vreemde stad zag rondlopen met skateboardschoenen, dan wist je van: Hé, that’s one of us! Nu is dat heel anders. Als je nu iemand met skateboard schoenen of kleding ziet rondlopen dan kan dat ook iemand zijn die op basketbal zit. Het is helemaal veranderd. Vroeger was skateboarden heel klein en ja, dat was een heel andere wereld.
Welke rol krijgt Louisa Menke?
Enerzijds zit in de tentoonstelling een groepsportret, anderzijds een individueel portret over een vrouw, Louisa Menke is 24 en is ondertussen geen meisje meer. Ze is van een generatie na ons en is super getalenteerd, ze skateboard als de neten. Als professioneel skateboardster leeft zij het leven dat ons niet is gelukt. Dat heeft natuurlijk ook te maken met het feit dat ze uit een andere tijd komt en de hele cultuur is veranderd, de sport heeft zich ontwikkeld.

Gyz, what exactly will you do with Fret Click at showroom MAMA?
At showroom MAMA I will create the exhibition 720˚, or 720 degrees. That's two circles, turning twice on your skateboard. 720˚ is about balance, maintaining control and simultaneous dizziness.
In 720˚ a documentary is presented which will have its premiere at MAMA's. In the final months before the exhibition I will be working hard on the making of this documentary. It is created especially for the exhibition but also needs to be autonomous, to be good in its own regard.
And this documentary is on Fret Click?
This documentary is about Fret Click and Fret Click is a group of 12 guys who started skateboarding when they were around twelve years old. I belonged to them too. This large group of boys came from Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Brabant province and the Randstad area. Together we lived through the biggest, craziest adventures and we were really very good at skateboarding.
What exactly is Fret Click?
Fret Click is a group of guys.
And......?
Fret stands for friend. It's kind of Brabant-English. Spelling friend wrong is kind of hip. The Click stands for the click between certain people. Fret Click is a combination of the two.
Were the Fret Clickers the best skateboarders in the Netherlands?
The best....... Yeah, a few of us were the best. It takes a while to get the knack of skateboarding. The average Fret Clicker started skateboarding in the late eighties and by the early nineties we'd become really good. Mike de Geus (r.i.p.) was Europe's top skater.
Was skateboarding well established in the Netherlands?
No, if you were in a strange town and saw someone walk around on skateboard shoes you'd know: Hé, that's one of us! That's completely different now. Now if you see someone wearing skateboard shoes of clothes it can also be someone who plays basketball. Things have changed a lot. In the early days skateboarding was minimal and yes, it was a different world.
Which role does Louisa Menke play?
In the exhibition there is a group portrait on the one hand and on the other an individual portrait on a woman, Louisa Menke is 24 years old and not a girl any more. She belongs to the next generation and is super talented, she skates like anything. As a professional skateboarder she lives the life that we couldn't. That of course is also due to the fact that she is from another era and the culture has changed, the sport has developed.
