Tijdens Koninginnenacht op 28 april ging MAMA's nieuwe show Fantasy Island – Expositie Robinson in première. Senior Curator Boris van Berkum presenteert in de show werken van 13 kunstenaars. Tijdens Art Rotterdam heeft MAMA met een aantal van de buitenlandse kunstenaars via de daar aanwezige internationale galeries al contact gelegd en zij werden nu uitgenodigd voor MAMA’s nieuwe expo. Reden genoeg voor een feestje dat begon in restaurant De Unie en zich verplaatste naar de showroom!

En wat aten we allemaal in De Unie? Een buffet zoals alleen Maher dat kan samenstellen, met als magnus opus: de hele kabeljauwen die we hier door Benjamin (aka 200.000 Turntables) geserveerd kregen. Kunstenaars Philip Jones, Lucy Wood, David Jones, Sabine Linse en galeriehouder Fred Mann zaten aan tafel met Nederlandse collega’s en probeerden te bedenken waar zij de volgende dag Koninginnedag het beste konden vieren. Ondertussen maakte de onovertroffen nieuwe medewerker Petra Berrevoets met MAMA Rookies Aline en Tim Z. de showroom klaar voor het publiek.

En ja, het werd ook daar weer druk. Bezoekers werden direct vergast op een concert van de installatie Koekoeksklub van Rob Donkers, die ieder kwartier een andere ritmische compositie laat horen. In combinatie met de bezwerende zang van het dvd-werk Im Grünen van Sabine Linse wat een stukje verder in de showroom hangt, zorgden zij deze avond voor prettige achtergrondmuziek.

Verder trokken de schilderijen van Philip Jones direct de aandacht. De werken van Jones vertellen het verhaal rond de mythische figuur ‘The Cop’ en zijn avonturen als superhero. Een ander absoluut hoogtepunt van de show zijn de gemorphte meisjes van Silvia B. Volledig behaard of gevangen in het verkeerde lichaam spelen zij met alle heersende ideeën over schoonheid en perfectie. Veel bezoekers gingen voor de combinatie van verontrustende lieflijkheid door de knieën zodat ze Lily Lucinda even recht in de ogen konden kijken.

Nog meer noemenswaardig die avond? De Rotterdamse kunstenaar Martijn te Winkel verscheen als Martine te Winkel; er waren wel 3 honden, waarvan er 1 een plas deed in een hoekje – opgeruimd door directeur-van-alle-markten-thuis Nous Faes en galeriehouders Jaap Witzenhausen, Nieck de Bruijn, curator Ken Pratt en kunstenaar Hendrik Kerstens – ons bekend van de MAMA booth op Art Rotterdam - kwamen ook nog langs.
En dat naast het publiek, ook de pers de show waardeert is een fantastische bonus!

Dit is met name een groot compliment voor Boris van Berkum die na het samenstellen van deze groepstentoonstelling, in de maanden mei-juli werkzaam zal zijn in het EKWC (het Europees Ceramisch Werk Centrum) te Den Bosch. In het EKWC zal hij werken aan een nieuwe serie beeldhouwwerken, met als belangrijkste thema’s: Perverted Landscapes en Utopian Furniture.

Mama’s new show ‘Fantasy Island – ‘Exhibition Robinson’ had it’s opening on Queensnight, April the 28th. In this show Senior Curator Boris van Berkum proudly presents the work of 13 artists. MAMA had contacted a few of the foreign artists already through the international galleries present at the ‘Art Rotterdam’ fair and invited them to participate in our new show. Enough reason to celebrate, which we did, starting at restaurant ‘De Unie’ and then moving on to the showroom!

And what did we eat at ‘De Unie’? A buffet which only Maher could compose, with as magnus opus: the complete codfish served by Benjamin (a.k.a. 200.000 Turntables). Artists Philip Jones, Lucy Wood, David Jones, Sabine Linse and gallery-owner Fred Mann sat at the table with Dutch colleagues trying to think up where to spend their Queensday the following day. In the meantime the invincible new employee Petra Berrevoets prepared the showroom for the audience, together with MAMA rookies Aline and Tim Z.

And yes, it got busy there as well. Visitors were immediately treated to a concert of the “Coocoosclub” by Rob Donkers, which plays a different rhythmic composition every fifteen minutes. In combination with the imploring song from the dvd-piece ‘Im Grünen’ by Sabine Linse, which came from the other side of the space, there was an agreeable background soundtrack.

Philip Jones’ paintings also attracted immediate attention. Jones’ work tells the tale of the mythic character ‘The Cop’ and his adventures as a superhero. Other absolute highlights of the show were the morphed girls by Silva B. Completely hairy or trapped in the wrong body; they toy with the common perception of beauty and perfection. The disturbing sweetness of ‘Lily Lucinda’ caused many visitors to drop to their knees wanting to gaze into her eyes.

More mentionable moments that evening? The Rotterdam artist Martijn te Winkel appeared as Martine te Winkel. There were 3 dogs, of which one peed in a corner, which was cleaned up by the all-round-director Nous Faes. Gallery-holders Jaap Witzenhauzen, Niek de Bruijn, curator Ken Pratt and artist Hendrik Kerstens, well known from the MAMA booth at the ‘Art Rotterdam’ fair, also dropped by.
And that the show is much valued by our visitors as well as the press, is a fantastic bonus!

Especially for Boris van Berkum, after completing this show he will be working in the EKWC (European Ceramic Work Centre) from May – July. Here he will work on a new series of sculptures, with Perverted Landscapes and Utopian Furniture as most important themes.
