MAMA bracht het Black Ball project van Yvonne Dröge Wendel naar Rotterdam in het kader van ‘Wereld van Witte de With’, het driedaagse festival dat zich afspeelt op Rotterdams culturele as; de Witte de Withstraat.
Vrijdagmorgen 8 september was het dan eindelijk zover... het zonnetje scheen en iedereen was er klaar voor....Onder toeziend oog van de Rotterdamse politie kreeg Black Ball van een klein legertje verpleegkundigen van Kraamzorghotel Zestienhoven zijn eerste duwtje de Rotterdamse wijken in.
En het mag met recht een avontuur genoemd worden! De route liep kriskras van Noord naar Zuid en terug naar MAMA’s homestead de Witte de Withstraat. Alle mogelijke reacties zijn we tegengekomen: blije peuters, rellende kinders, opgewonden bejaarden, feestvierende festivalbezoekers en bozige hondenbezitters. Mooie verhalen en beelden heeft het project zeker opgeleverd.
Vrijdag rolde de bal vanaf het Kraamzorghotel naar de Witte de Withstraat. Tijdens de officiële opening van het festival om 17.00 speelde de bal de hoofdrol. Daarna met z’n allen naar de Gay-Palace waar Black Ball ging slapen in de meest sexy crib ever terwijl het publiek zich tot 4.00 prima vermaakte op onze Ballroom Blitz party.
Zaterdag ging de bal spectaculair de Erasmusbrug over richting de markt op het Afrikaanderplein, waar de bal voor veel commotie en hilariteit zorgde. Hierna volgde een welverdiende adempauze met heerlijke lunch voor de MAMA vrijwilligers bij Rob Baris’ restaurant ‘Het Gemaal’. Na het doorkruisen van ‘De Kiefhoek’ kwam de bal alweer aan bij zijn tweede overnachtingadres; de RET remise.
De laatste dag bracht een zeer relaxte tocht over het Noordereiland, de kop van Zuid en borrelen bij Café Rotterdam. Bijna werd nog onze gloednieuwe productiedame Kia Kubic omver gekegeld toen de bal van de trap naast de Erasmusbrug afstuiterde, maar gelukkig is ze nog heel. En zo kwam dit mooie project tot een einde in de Witte de Withstraat.
Black Ball hield drie dagen lang de Rotterdamse gemoederen flink bezig en was de eyecatcher van het festival. Dit was mede te danken aan het enthousiasme van de mensen die de bal tegen het lijf liepen, de MAMA medewerkers en vrijwilligers, maar ook dankzij de vele media-aandacht.

Showroom MAMA invited Black Ball back to the Netherlands during 'World of Witte de With', the annual festival taking place at Rotterdam's cultural hotspot and MAMA’s homestead the Witte de With-straat.
Friday-morning September 8 it was finally time to give the bal it’s first push. The sun was shining and under supervision of Rotterdam’s finest Black Ball was launched into the city by a small army of nurses of the maternity-hotel at airport Zestienhoven.
And what an adventure this was! From the north to the south criss-cross through Rotterdam. We’ve encountered every possible response; happy babies, kids riotting, excited seniors, happy-party-festival-visitors and angry dog-owners.
Friday the ball took of from the maternity-hotel to the Witte de With-straat. The ball was the firecracker during the official opening of the festival. Afterwards we all moved on to the Gay-Palace to put Black Ball in the most sexy crib ever while everyone was dancing till dawn.
Saturday a spectacular sight whilst the ball was crossing the Erasmusbrug on to the market at the Afrikaanderplein where the ball got lots of attention. Then, a well-deserved fab lunch at ‘Het Gemaal’ for our volunteers. And alas, after roaming the ‘Kiefhoek’ the ball arrived at the second sleep-over address; the RET remittance.
The last day was the most relaxed day; a trip over the ‘Noordereiland’, the ‘Kop van Zuid’ and yes, some cocktail-time at Café Rotterdam. Our brand-new production-lady Kia Kubic almost got crushed by Black Ball, but fortunately she survived it!
Black Ball got Rotterdam people everywhere talking for three days and was the eye-catcher of the ‘Wereld van Witte de With-festival. Of-course the enthusiasm of the Rotterdammers contributed a lot to this, as well as the MAMA employees and volunteers.
