One Step Beyond
Mr. Miyagi Curating Tomorrow 2005 (pilot project) Showroom MAMA Rotterdam, NL

Spacequake seems a very apt title for the exhibition it represents. Although this show is the result of a broad research, lengthy discussions and diligent preparations, it also reflects a project that has, in many respects, the qualities of the experimental.

Spacequake's six curators are Karina van Bezooijen (artist), Yasser Ballemans (artist), Rudy Nacken (Interactive Design student), Sandra van Dongen (arts manager), Gerben Willers (Art History student) and Carolien van den Akker (art historian).

Coming from rather diverse backgrounds, they had to join and to co-operate on unknown territory. This territory was marked as much by the individual ambitions of the curators-to-be themselves, as it was also shaped, limited and opened by Showroom MAMA’s facilities and the high expectations imposed by the reputation of such an established exhibition space.

Throughout the Mr. Miyagi Programme 2005, the participants had to cope with a difficult set of challenges: reviewing numerous Benelux graduation shows; exploring one's personal ideas about art and art exhibitions; exposing themselves to critical revisions and discovering one's own special talents within a group of strangers. This demanded a high degree of dedication and energy, indeed. Curating, one might argue, is a process of mentoring, mediation and critique. While the Mr. Miyage participants were in that sense 'curated' in their own roles and skills, they had to transform this experience immediately into the development of their team's exhibition project. So, Spacequake is about mapping, confusion and fusion. And, looking at the artists presented in the show, there will be an exciting clash of order, wilderness (and harvesting, for that matter!), too. Congratulations!
