Op een koude januaridag belden we met het Rotterdamse ontwerpburo Demakersvan of ze geïnteresseerd waren om voor MAMA op maat het Lace Fence te maken. Maar het moest wel snel! Judith de Graauw kwam op inspectie, zette zich nog datzelfde weekend aan de ontwerptafel, en maandags kon de opdracht worden gefiatteerd. Dat het uiteindelijk nog tot eind maart zou duren voor het werk geïnstalleerd was, kwam doordat de boot uit India – waar Lace Fence geproduceerd wordt – er nu eenmaal een aantal weken over doet.  Ons gaf het tijd om overleg te voeren met het bedrijf De Melker, dat op maat de zwaar industriële frames, waarin het Lace Fence gespannen ging worden, leverde en kwam installeren. Practisch gezien moesten we zelf de weg vrij maken voor installatie van het omvangrijke hekwerk – denk aan verwarmingen, alarm, deursponningen etcetera, die allemaal in de weg zaten. En ook maakten we een afspraak met Siebe Thissen (BKOR) die het tot ‘kunstwerk openbare ruimte gerelateerd aan veiligheid’ bestempelde en het adopteerde.  Daar zitten we dan, achter onze eigen tralies, mooi te wezen! We hebben ervoor gekozen om Lace Fence aan de binnenkant van ons kantoor te laten bevestigen, omdat de ruiten buiten nu eenmaal vaker gezeemd moeten worden. Daarnaast vroegen we Judith om een gevarieerd en niet te druk patroon over de vijf ramen aan te brengen, dat het MAMA logo zichtbaar zou laten. Lace Fence is ook te verkrijgen in wit, maar wij kozen voor het traditionele ‘puur natuur’ van gegalvaniseerd ijzer, net zoals de frames van De Melker. Lekker industrieel!  Lace Fence is eerder als scheidingswand te Amsterdam en onlangs als pergola in Milaan geïnstalleerd. Dit is de eerste toepassing die inbraakgevoeligheid tegengaat. De productiewijze gebeurt met de hand; in de fabriek die Demakersvan in 2007 hebben opgezet in Bangalore werken op dit moment 40 man aan de productie.  Demakersvan  De Melker  BKOR  |
On a cold January day we rang with the desingners Demakersvan to see if they were interested to produce a costumized Lace Fence especially for MAMA. But it had to quickly produced! Judith the Graauw came on inspection, put herselve the same weekend to the design table, and on Monday the task could be authorised. That it would last until the end of March when the work eventually was installed, came because that the boat from India - where Lace Fence is produced – travels for number of weeks.  To us this gave time to conduct the firm De Melker, who provided the heavily industrial frames, in which the Lace Fence would be spead, and came install. From a practical point of view we had to make way for the installation of the sizeable fence ourselves - think of the heating, alarm, doorposts etcetera. And also we turned to Siebe Thissen (BKOR) who labelled the work into `art work public space related to security’ and adopted it.  Here we are then, behind our own lattice, being beautiful! We chose to fix the Lace Fence to the inside of our office, because the windows must be washed more often from the outside. Besides we asked Judith for a varied and not too busy pattern concerning the five windows, which would leave the MAMA logo visible. Lace Fence is also to obtain in white, but we chose for the traditional galvanised iron, just like the frames of De Melker. Attractive industrial!  Lace Fence has earlier been installed as a separating wall in Amsterdam and recently as a pergola in Milaan. This is the first application to reduce burglary. The production is manual; in the factory which Demakersvan set up in Bangalore in 2007 where at this moment 40 man for production work.  Demakersvan De Melker BKOR |
