Op vrijdag 14 november, om 18.00 uur opent Showroom MAMA de groepsexpositie SMLXL. Getoond wordt werk van groene en rijpe kunstenaars, die bovendien op zeer uiteenlopende schaal werken.

Deelnemende kunstenaars: Silvia Russell, Ester Janssen, IEPE, Joris Oprins, Tessa Koot, Erik Habets en Jan van Nuenen.

Small: Silvia Russell toont een selectie van kleine tekeningen, gebaseerd op een zeer ingrijpende gebeurtenis in haar leven. Deze tekeningen zijn zeer direct en tonen de reactie van de kunstenaar op haar alledaagse omgeving. Silvia Russell woont en werkt tijdelijk in New York en maakt dagelijks minstens een tekening. Door de wijze waarop het werk gepresenteerd wordt toont het zowel samenhang als contrast en wordt er een indringend, persoonlijk verhaal verteld.

Small: Ester Janssen werkt ook op klein formaat, maar ruimtelijk. Zij maakt kleine huisjes; archetypisch voor een ideaalbeeld en een gestandaardiseerde wereld. De ingetogen stijl en het kleine formaat van het werk zijn een reactie op de overvloed aan visuele impulsen waaraan we worden blootgesteld en nodigen de kijker uit tot concentratie en contemplatie.

Medium: Op 14 november strijden Iepe the Joker en Luis the Lawyer -in Paradiso, Amsterdam- in de boksring en op het schaakbord om de wereldtitel schaken-boksen. Het kampioensgevecht wordt onder auspiciën van de World Chess Boxing Organisation (WCBO) georganiseerd. Hiermee introduceert het WCBO de nieuwe koningsdiscipline in de sportwereld. In Showroom MAMA zal een videoverslag van deze match vertoont worden, naast diverse parafernalia zoals de originele Champion's Belt, de schaakrobotarm, de outfits van de deelnemers en ander materiaal.

Small tot Extra Large: Joris Oprins presenteert zijn nieuwste animatie-video 'How Snjezi Tjeiovec Found His Ancestors' : een even aangrijpende als hilarische vertelling in de traditie van de klassieke Russische verhalenvertellers en de voormalige Oostblok-animatiestudio's. http://www.jobjorisenmarieke.nl

Large: Tessa Koot presenteert haar levensgrote 'Ramona Dull', een beeld -of pop- van een strijdbare vrouw, vervaardigd uit leer. Hiermee wordt het concept 'girl power' met genaaldhakte voeten getreden: Koot gebruikt ambachtelijke technieken om bij te dragen aan de nieuwe, feministische Pop-artbeweging en sluit zo aan bij fenomenen als girl band Chicks on Speed, rock star Peaches en kunstenaar Madeleine Berkheimer. Het beeld is ontstaan in een organisch proces en is opgebouwd uit vele honderden kleine patroondelen.

Extra Large: Erik Habets toont het grootste werk van deze expositie, toepasselijk 'Hannibal' getiteld. Dit beeldhouwwerk van een reusachtige olifant sluit aan bij andere grote, op comic-geinspireerde sculpturen waarmee Habets op een humoristische wijze de toeschouwers wil overdonderen en verwonderen. " I show hero's from the past and the present big strong and funny, but there is always something bigger."

Small tot Extra Large: Als speciale toegift beleeft ook de video ‘SET 4' van Jan van Nuenen zijn premiere. ‘SET 4' is opgebouwd uit beelden "van het meest saaie televisiekanaal dat ik kon vinden: the Sports Channel", aldus Van Nuenen. De animatie die Van Nuenen componeerde is een hypnotiserende, kaleidoscopische choreografie van tafeltennis, schoonspringen en basketball.

Showroom MAMA's group show SMLXL opens on Friday, 14th November at 18:00. The show combines works of emerging and more established artists. The scales on which they work are very different .

The artists exhibiting works are Silvia Russel, Ester Janssen, IEPE, Joris Oprins, Tessa Koot, Erik Habets and Jan van Nuenen.

Small: Silvia Russel shows a selection of small drawings, based on a drastic change in her life. These drawings are very direct and show the artist's reaction to the world that surrounds her. Silvia Russell temporarily lives and works in New York and makes at least one drawing a day. Both coherence and contrast are shown in the presentation of the work, thus communicating a very personal story.

Small: Ester Janssen also works on a small scale. But in her case it is with sculpture. She makes little houses: archetypal for a standardised, ideal world. The austere style and diminutive scale of the objects are a reaction against the abundance of visual impulses to which we are exposed and invite the viewer to concentrate and contemplate.

Medium: On November 14th, Iepe the Joker and Luis the Lawyer battle in the boxing ring and on the chess board for the Chess-Boxing World Title at Paradiso in Amsterdam. The champion's bout is organised under the auspices of the World Chess Boxing Organisation. With this, The WCBO introduces the new King's Discipline to the world of sports. A video report of this event will be shown in Showroom MAMA, together with various paraphernalia such as the champion's belt, the chess robot arm, the outfits of the participants and other material.

Small to Extra Large: Joris Oprins presents his latest animation video 'How Snjezi Tjeiovec Found His Ancestors". Equally touching and hilarious this is a tale in the tradition of the classical Russian storytellers and the former Eastern bloc animation studios.

Large: Tessa Koot presents her life-size 'Ramona Dull', a statue -or doll- of an Amazonian woman, made from leather. Koot's sculpture tramples on the concept of girl power in high heels. She uses classical crafts(wo)manship to contribute to the new body of feminist pop-art , connecting with phenomena such as the girl band; Chicks on Speed, rock star Peaches and visual artist Madeleine Berkheimer. The sculpture evolved through an organic process and is compiled for hundreds of small pattern parts.

Extra Large: Erik Habets shows the biggest work of this exhibition, very aptly named 'Hannibal'. This statue of a giant elephant refers to and connects with other large-scale, comic-inspired sculptures, with which Habets wants to impress and amaze the viewer in a humorous way. "I show heroes from the past and the present; big, strong and funny. But there is always something bigger."

Small to Extra Large: As a special bonus, we will also premiere Jan van Nuenen's video 'SET 4'. According to Van Nuenen, 'Set 4' has been built up from images taken from "the most boring television channel I know: the Sports Channel". The animation he has composed is a hypnotizing, kaleidoscopic choreography of table tennis, competitive diving and basketball.
