My Mother was A Freedom Fighter
Aja Monet (VS) - Workshop & Poetry Reading, 29 October, 13:00 - 17:30
Calling all storytellers, visionaries, and lovers of language. Brooklyn poet Aja Monet is back in the Netherlands for a poetry reading on Saturday October 28th at Showroom MAMA Rotterdam, to surprise us again with her breathtaking poetry and spoken word.
Aja Monet is the youngest individual to have ever won the legendary Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe Grand Slam title. This year she was also a featured speaker at the Women’s March on Washington DC where she shared the title poem of her latest book My Mother Was A Freedom Fighter (Haymarket Books 2017). Aja is recognized for combining her spellbound voice and powerful imagery on stage. Her poems tackle issues like racisms, sexism, heartbreak and grief. But also love, motherhood, spirituality and Black joy.

Where Harry Belafonte has called Aja the true definition of an artists, Angela Y. Davis says: “Aja Monet’s poetry offers us textures of feeling and radical shifts of meaning that expand our capacity to envision and fight for new worlds.” Before her reading, Aja will also give her Poetic Power workshop hosted by Roots & Routes and Woorden Worden Zinnen.

This workshop is an exploration of the power of metaphor and simile in our every day lives, and how language shapes and arranges our world, as well as our ability to imagine a new one.

Join Aja Monet for an intimate and holistic poetry workshop where we will create new work and share what is discovered with one another. You don't have to write poetry to be a poet, however all poets see the power of poetics in everyday life. Let's celebrate the human search for meaning and encourage the strength of our inner voice.

You can sign up for the workshop until Friday the 27th of October.
