In recent weeks at MAMA, the public got a chance to see the decor, in virtual reality, for CULTURESPORT: Rotterdam 1995. After an intense period of animating, research, and recording in Rotterdam, and Athens, Georgia, USA, the first episode of this new science fiction anime series premieres on Saturday 2 April 2016.
The pilot episode of the trans-historical anime series CULTURESPORT, developed under the artistic direction of John Michael Boling, is set in Rotterdam in 1995. It introduces Ton and Bass, twins from Charlois, Rotterdam, who are into gabber music. A dangerous scientist selects them for an experiment. However, sucked deeper into his digital dream world, they realise his bad intentions for them and the harbour city.

This episode is the result of a transdisciplinary collaboration between the American team of CULTURESPORT, MAMA, and Rotterdam artists including Rotterdam Terror Corps, Nada van Dalen, Tommy Ventevogel, and many others. Rotterdam Terror Corps, a longstanding and notorious hardcore techno group renowned for their intense live shows, wrote a piece of music especially for this collaboration, which references the gabber style of 1995. Nada van Dalen gave style advice for the animated gabbers and designed ten limited edition bomber jackets for CULTURESPORT: Rotterdam 1995. These are available exclusively at MAMA and GROOS. Based on a script translated by screenwriter Tommy Ventevogel, the voices of the gabbers are performed by Thomas Dudkiewicz, Marijn Alexander de Jong, and Jos Nargy. For the screenplay, John Michael Boling worked with MAMA and Rotterdammers, such as Gyz la Rivière, Mike Redman, George Ruseler, and Milan Tilder, conducting extensive research in and around the city to ensure the story has a genuine Rotterdam feel. The development process can be followed in virtual reality at MAMA's showroom using Cardboard viewers.

CULTURESPORT premieres at Cinerama on 2 April 2016, with half-hourly screenings between 17:00 and 19:00. Following this in MAMA's showroom is Performance Formerly Known as Performance or Camouflaging Kelly by performance artist Lisa Vereertbrugghen. Her performance uses 'hakken' as a starting point to depict the relationship between camouflage and group identity.

Tickets for the premiere and performance cost €4 and are available from Showroom MAMA or on the door. For reservations email info@showroommama.nl. Tickets can be collected at MAMA between 16:30 and 17:00.
