MAMA (1997) is a project by the Public Art Squad Foundation and is situated in Rotterdam. MAMA is a platform for visual culture on the cutting edge of visual arts and popular culture and serves as a home base for the youngest generation of producers of images, artists and an audience aged between 16 and 26. MAMA produces exhibitions, books and magazines, organizes performances and events, presents and represents young artists at home and abroad and is part of an international network of like-minded organizations.
In addition to programming exhibitions in its own showroom located on the cultural axis of Rotterdam, Witte de Withstraat, MAMA organizes projects on location - within Rotterdam and far beyond. MAMA features an ample program of educational and additional projects. MAMA also investigates and develops new ways of reaching a broad audience by means of art and culture.
The Rookies are MAMA's volunteers who provide valuable support for our wide range of activities. With the help of staff and external professionals the Rookies Programme provides extensive work experience for young trainees in the cultural field.
MAMA is open from Wednesday through Sunday from 1 till 6 pm and by appointment.
MAMA exists for more than fifteen years now and has turned into a much discussed and influential platform offering an intractable, kaleidoscopic view on contemporary visual culture to be seen and experienced by a broad audience.
MAMA soon developed into an expert in the field of youth- and contemporary visual culture and found itself at the foundation of an active development in Dutch art, aimed at participation. The original target group aged 16 - 26, has been active in the organization from the beginning. In 2005 / 2006 MAMA developed two educational courses intended to develop talent: MAMA Rookies, a course for auxiliary jobs in the cultural field and Rookies MA (formerly Mister Miyagi Curating Tomorrow), aimed at youth organizing and compiling exhibitions independently.
MAMA is often consulted by private-, governmental- and art institutes for advice, participation in projects and for workshops. In its programme and educational courses the organization frequently collaborates with other cultural institutions at home and abroad.
MAMA's partners include(d):Stichting Art Rotterdam, Stichting Rotterdam Festivals, Stichting Nieuwe Rotterdamse Cultuur, Stichting Kunstzinnige Vorming Rotterdam, Stichting Rotterdamse Museumnacht, The Centrum Beeldende Kunst, the Netherlands Architecture Institute, the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, Historisch Museum het Schielandshuis, International Film Festival Rotterdam, various educational institutes such as the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague, the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam - Creative College for Media and Technique - , Rotterdam University and many artistis, galleries and collectives.
